Athar

Your journal. No accounts, no servers.

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Athar is a personal journal that works on your phone. This page explains plainly what the app does with your data, and the short answer is: it takes none of it.

What do we collect?

Nothing. No accounts, no server of our own, no ads, no analytics or tracking tools. We don’t know who you are, or how often you open the app.

Where is your writing kept?

On your phone alone: the text in the app’s storage, and photos, videos and recordings in the app’s folder. None of it is uploaded anywhere.

If you turn on iOS backup (iCloud or a computer) in your phone’s settings, the app’s data may be included in that backup. That is the phone’s system and your choice, not the app.

Permissions the app asks for

Photos: to choose photos and videos to add to your pages.

Camera and microphone: to take a photo or video, or record your voice, inside a page.

Notifications: for a gentle daily reminder and for Echo notifications. All of them are scheduled on your phone itself, and nothing you wrote appears in them.

Face ID: to lock the app or a single memory. The system checks your face and tells the app only the result; the app never sees your face.

All of these permissions are optional, and you can withdraw them at any time in your phone’s settings.

In-app purchase

Purchases are made through Apple. We don’t see your payment details or your identity. The app keeps only a note on your phone that you bought Athar Plus, and asks the App Store when it opens to confirm it.

App updates

The app connects to the Expo service to fetch fixes, and sends it only the version number and the type of system, never anything you wrote.

Backup and export

The backup file and the PDF book are made by the app on your phone, and you alone decide where they’re saved and who receives them through the share menu.

These files aren’t encrypted, so keep them somewhere you trust. A memory that is locked inside the app is kept in the backup without encryption.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app from your phone deletes everything in it. We have no copy and can’t bring it back, which is why we recommend making a backup first.

Changes to this policy

If anything above changes, we’ll update this page and note the date of the update at the top.
